AnancusIllustration

An artist's impression of Anancus.

Anancus, whose name derives from an ancient Roman king,[1] was an elephant relative which lived from the late Miocene until the early Pleistocene epoch. Anancus was endemic to the forests of Africa, Europe and Asia.

Measuring up to three metres tall,[2] Anancus height was comparable to that of some species of mammoth, which were close relatives of Anancus.
