The primitive sauropods, the big plant-eating dinosaurs with the long necks, originated in Triassic times, but came to prominence during the early Jurassic period. The Victorian paleontologists named the group "sauropod" because they saw a resemblance in the arrangement of the foot bones to that of a lizard, as the sauropod had five toes compared with three of the contemporary theropods.
