When the Pleistocene arrived, most of the magnificent animals of the Tertiary had been killed off by climate changes or were hunted to extinction. A few prehistoric animals still remained, such as the Woolly Mammoth, Smilodon, Glyptodon, Megatherium, and others. Around 10,000 years ago, the species of primate called Homo sapiens became the primary carnivores on land and developed civilizations.
