The first plants on earth were microscopic algaes. These algaes took in Carbon Dioxide and gave off oxygen in return. By the Silurian period, plants like Cooksonia had moved onto land. Plants grew to massive sizes by the Devonian and Carboniferous periods and are still massive today (like the giant Redwood and Sequoia). The first flowers appeared in the Cretaceous period. After the Cretaceous period, large rainforests took over the land. Then, fields replaced the rainforests as the planet got cooler.
