The Devonian was a very important period of history in which the first lobe-finned fish crawled onto land.  The oceans were filled with ferocious fish while not much happened on land until the end of the period.  In the ocean, Eusthenopteron and Panderichthys grew specialized fins and then Tiktaalik moved onto land.  It grew lungs that could breath oxygen out of water and the fins became legs.  As the period came to a close, the first amphibians like Ichthyostega and Acanthostega evolved the ability to stay on land for long periods of time.
